You can find many things in this world that beautifully flow free, creating harmonies and color. There are also many grand structures that we would never been able to admire without normal people striving for greatness. I thought of this, and I thought of painting. Painting happened to be the next project that caught my attention in my art class. Painting has a certain calming effect; the watercolors blend together, creating something lovely and completely unique. | |
The finished picture tells a story, but sometimes the steps taken to make the picture are even more descriptive and enchanting. I first started out by taking a large paintbrush, some watercolors, and letting my hand stroke blazing reds and soft yellows across the blank page. Sooner than I know it, my blank page has turned into a brilliant sunset, with colors mixing together like fire. After the paint has dried, I begin my next step. My eyes linger, filling with fear that today's painting won't turn out as well. But I dig in anyway, for many pretty things in this world came from artists who ignored their fears.
I splash some black tempera, a type of paint, onto a palette and find a paintbrush that is of medium size. Beginning to outline a silhouette of the Eiffel Tower, my head starts thinking about all of the wonderful things that could happen in Paris. Yes, I have a severe case of wanderlust (sigh).
Deciding the shiny silhouette of the tower isn't enough, I use a minuscule paintbrush to add my final detail. Faintly next to the Eiffel Tower, the words je t'aime have been written, French for I love you.

My favorite part of this project was how I didn't fret about how things could go wrong. This project was created to help us learn new things, and there is no way to get better at something if you stay in your comfort zone. If you find yourself avoiding something because of fear, at least try to face it. If people such as Monet or Van Gogh didn't push past the critics, we wouldn't have the gorgeous paintings that are around today, painting the scenes that generations from now will still study. I really hope this is a message that can inspire many people like it has to me. Comfort zones won't create success. Go out today and try something new. You might be surprised of what may happen.
